Man dies after son held for 'kidnap'

A 73-year-old man died of cardiac arrest after his son was arrested by Bangalore police for allegedly kidnapping and marrying a girl, a few months ago.

Police have given the name of dead as Somashekhar, a resident of Mooranadu, near Madikeri.

Deviprasad, the son of Somashekhar, met Ramya, a resident of Bangalore, through a social networking site eight months ago and they fell in love. Ramya’s family was against their marriage.

But the couple tied the knot at Ashwini Temple in Madikeri in May and also registered their marriage on June 7. They stayed together for three months.

Missing complaint

On August 28, Deviprasad lodged a complaint at Madikeri Rural police station stating that Ramya had gone missing and suspected that her parents could have kidnapped her.

However, Ramya’s father,  who is a jeep driver for a senior police officer in Bangalore, lodged a kidnap case against Deviprasad at Siddapura police station (Bangalore) on September 1.

In the wee hours of September 2, Ramya’s family members along with a few policemen barged into the house of Deviprasad.

They allegedly manhandled Deviprasad and pushed his father, who had diabetes and blood pressure, before arresting the former.

Somashekar, who suffered cardiac arrest was rushed to a private hospital in Madikeri. Shocked by his son’s arrest, he died of heart attack in the wee hours of Wednesday.

Released on parole

Deviprasad, who was arrested and taken to Bangalore, was produced before a court and was sent to judicial custody. It is learnt that Deviprasad has been released on parole following the death of his father.

Mysore Range IGP Ramachandra Rao said an impartial and comprehensive inquiry will be conducted into the incident.

Kamal Pant, Additional Commissioner (Law and Order), Bangalore, said that stringent action would be initiated against any officer found guilty in the incident.

H S Revanna, DCP (South) the divisional DCP under whose jurisdiction Siddapura police station lies, said that the Madikeri police had registered a case over the death of Somashekhar. case.

He said that they were waiting for the autopsy report and also the investigation report of Madikeri police who are trying to establish whether Siddapura police really assaulted the elderly man leading to his eventual death.

Strict action

He said that if the investigations revealed the involvement of policemen in Somashekar’s death, strict action will be taken against them. Siddapura police refused to comment on the issue.

सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने फैसला सुनाते हुए कहा है कि अगर कोई पति किसी अन्‍य महिला के नजदीक जाता है तो उसे अपनी पत्‍नी पर क्रूरता का कसूरवार नहीं ठहराया जा सकता. कोर्ट का कहना है कि ऐसा मामला तब तक क्रूरता के दायरे में नहीं आएगा जब तक कि पति की नजदीकी अन्य महिला के साथ इतनी न हो जाए कि उसकी पत्नी आत्महत्या करने पर मजबूर हो जाए.
जस्टिस केएस राधाकृष्‍णन की अध्‍यक्षता वाली बेंच ने कहा, 'हमारा ऐसा मानना है कि शादीशुदा रिश्ते के कायम रहने के दौरान अगर पति किसी और के नजदीक आ जाता है और वह अपनी वैवाहिक जिम्मेदारियां नहीं निभाता है तो भी यह पत्नी के साथ क्रूरता नहीं है.'
उन्‍होंने कहा, 'लेकिन अगर दूसरी महिला से पति की नजदीकी इस कदर हो कि पत्‍नी आत्‍महत्‍या करने पर मजबूर हो जाए तो आईपीसी की धारा 498-ए के तहत मामला बनता है.'
यह फैसला एक शख्‍स की अपील पर सुनाया गया, जिसके ऊपर धारा 498-ए के तहत अपनी पत्नी के साथ क्रूरता बरतने और धारा 306 के तहत आत्महत्या के लिए उकसाने का आरोप था.
इस जोड़े ने 1989 में शादी की थी. बाद में पति का अपनी सहयोगी के साथ अफेयर हो गया. इसके बाद तथाकथित रूप से पत्नी अलग-थलग महसूस करने लगी और मार्च 1996 में उसने आत्महत्या कर ली.
बेंच ने कहा, 'अदालत ने पाया कि तथाकथित एक्स्ट्रा-मेरिटल रिश्ता ऐसा नहीं था कि वह आरोपी शख्स की पत्नी को आत्महत्या के लिए मजबूर कर दे. इसके साथ ही आत्महत्या करने वाली महिला के पति ने कभी कोई ऐसा काम नहीं किया जो सामान्य परिस्थिति में पत्नी को आत्महत्या के लिए उकसाए.'
अदालत ने यह भी कहा कि अगर साबित हो जाए तो एक्स्ट्रा-मेरिटल अफेयर को गैरकानूनी और अनैतिक करार दिया जा सकता है. लेकिन इस मामले में यह साबित नहीं किया जा सका है कि पति ने पत्नी को आत्महत्या के लिए मजबूर किया.

Man kills wife’s lover in Chennai

CHENNAI: A 33-year-old painter killed his wife's lover when he found them sleeping together in his house at Maduravoyal here in the wee hours of Sunday.
M Sakthivel, a resident of Rajiv Gandhi Nagar in Alapakkam, left home at 8pm on Saturday after an altercation with his wife, Bhuvaneshwari. He returned home at 12.30am on Sunday and knocked on the door. When the door was not opened, he got suspicious and barged into the house and found Bhuvaneshwari sleeping with his neighbour, Satish.

An angry Sakthivel attacked Satish with a knife and killed him in front of Bhuvaneshwari. Sakthivel's three children were sleeping in the adjacent room when the murder happened.
After the murder, Sakthivel went to the Maduravoyal police station and informed the police about it. They arrested and produced him before a magistrate court in the city on Sunday. The court remanded him in judicial custody.
Preliminary inquiries revealed that Bhuvaneshwari had eloped with Satish a year ago. Based on Sakthivel's complaint, the police then registered a woman missing case and traced her. The police reportedly warned her and asked her to stay with her husband. However, she allegedly continued to meet Satish.
Sakthivel married Bhuvaneshwari 10 years ago.

1 in 10 men in Asia Pacific has raped an unknown woman, finds study

LONDON: In a new study to be announced on Tuesday by the British medical journal The Lancet, a survey of more than 10,000 men in Asia Pacific region has found that over 1 in 10 men report having raped a woman who was not their partner.

The number rose tremendously when rape of a partner was included.

Nearly 75% of those who committed rape said that they did so for sexual entitlement and over 50% said they did it for entertainment. Another 50% of men reported having committed some form of physical or sexual violence or abuse against their partner.

Men were surveyed from nine different sites across six different countries: Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Indonesia, Papua New Guinea and Sri Lanka as part of a UN study on men and violence for prevention of gender-based violence in Asia and the Pacific.

Professor Rachel Jewkes of South Africa's Medical Research Council who carried out the study said, "In view of the high prevalence of rape worldwide, our findings clearly show that prevention strategies need to show increased focus on the structural and social risk factors for rape. We now need to move towards a culture of preventing the perpetration of rape from ever occurring, rather than relying on prevention through responses."

The surveys were performed by trained male interviewers who recorded results onto handheld computer devices with bespoke software. Participants answered the most sensitive questions alone by self-completing audio recordings in response to questions.

Men were not asked directly whether they had committed rape or violence, but were rather asked questions such as, "Have you ever forced a woman who was not your wife or girlfriend at the time to have sex?", or "Have you ever had sex with a woman who was too drugged or drunk to indicate whether she wanted it?"

Overall, over one in ten men surveyed (11%) reported having raped a woman who was not their partner.

When raping a partner was included, this proportion rose to nearly 24%. Of those men who reported having committed rape, just under half (45%) said they had raped more than one woman.

The prevalence of rape perpetration varied widely between study sites. The lowest prevalence of single perpetrator rape of a female non-partner was in rural Bangladesh (3%), while the highest prevalence (27%) was in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

The lowest prevalence (2%) of male rape was found in Jayapura and Jakarta in Indonesia while the highest (8%) was again found in Bougainville, Papua New Guinea.

When asked why they had committed rape, 73% of respondents who had committed rape said that they did so for reasons of sexual entitlement.

Over half (59%) said they did it for entertainment, while over a third (38%) said they had raped a woman in order to punish her. Over half (58%) of men who had raped somebody who was not their partner had committed their first rape as teenagers.

Men with a history of victimization especially childhood sexual abuses were more likely to have committed rape than those without such a past.

A history of physical violence towards a partner, having paid for sex, or having had a large number of sexual partners were also associated with an increased likelihood of having committed rape against a non-partner.

Popular music director/anchor James Vasanthan was recently arrested for allegedly abusing his 63-year-old neighbour. Now, he is out on bail, and, he opened up to Chennai Times about his arrest. He says, "It was around 3.30 pm on Sunday when cops came into our house. Though initially I was not told about the arrest, later I was informed that I would be held. They didn't even tell me on what charge they were arresting me. Following that, I was imprisoned in Puzhal jail for two days."

He was accused by the woman for displaying indecent gestures in public. Reacting to the allegations, he says, "Some women take the sexual harassment law to their advantage and target innocent men like me. This is not the first case that has been forced on me. I know very well that this woman does everything with the support of the top cop in the city."
Trouble started for the composer when he bought a house in Palavakkam in 2011. "Since then, this neighbour is causing trouble. Her intention is to get our place which she asked us to sell to her when we first bought it. At first, she filed an attempt-to-murder case and now, she lodges a sexual harassment case. I will legally disprove all these false allegations."
James has spent nearly 48 hours in the prison. He says, "I have a positive approach to life; so, I enjoyed my stay in the jail. My wife has been my pillar of strength during this crisis. I will strive hard for justice."

BANGALORE: This technology hub is witnessing a sharp rise in cases of discord in live-in relationships. Most cases reported are those of people working in the software and BPO industries.

"The number of cases of break-up in live-in relationships was 30 during 2011-12. This rose to 42 between April 2012 and March 2013. With an average of six cases reported every month, the number is expected to double this year," says Rani Shetty, chief coordinator with Mahila Sahaya Vani, a family counselling centre attached to city police.

Most live-in couples are in the 25-35 age group. To get accommodation, they declare themselves a married couple. Counsellors say such relationships are for financial and social security. Things fall apart when the boy refuses to tie the knot.

To get a house on rent, live-in couples tell landlords they are married. "They live like husband and wife, but their relationship has no legal sanction. When there is a break-up, we refer it to police as a case of cheating," says Aparna Poonesh, a counsellor at the Sahaya Vani. "It's for social and financial security. Nearly 60% of the cases referred to us revolve around sex," says Shetty. Most cases brought to the Sahaya Vani are from the corporate world. "They get to know each other mostly through social media, and share the same language and culture. With their peer groups away, they have individual choices and freedom," she adds.

"Youngsters should be made aware of the problems of living together," says Shetty. "As the relationship doesn't have legal sanction, they need to be careful. Most cases brought to our notice are of women complaining that the men they had lived with refused to marry them."

Marriage dream shattered

Runa (name changed), 27, an employee of a software multinational in the US, was attracted to Bangalore while chatting online with Biswajit (name changed).

As the friendship grew, Biswajit, 30, invited her to the city and promised to find her a job. She quit her job and flew to Bangalore three years ago. After living at a paying guest accommodation for a while, she joined Biswajit, who had taken a house on rent declaring himself and Runa husband and wife.

Runa landed a job. Things went smoothly till Biswajit's parents starting asking him to get married.

One day, Biswajit suddenly disappeared. Runa learnt that he had gone to look for a bride.

On his return, they had an argument. Biswajit manhandled Runa, leading her to the Sahaya Vani. A case of cheating was registered after Biswajit refused, at the counselling sessions, to marry Runa.

शक्ति नगर से चार दिन से गायब विवाहिता सोमवार को वापस घर लौट आई। उसकी मा ने थाने में शिकायत दे रखी थी कि वह अपने मोहल्ले के दीपक नामक युवक के साथ गई थी। इसके चलते युवक दीपक व उसकी कथित प्रेमिका खुद ही थाने पहुच गए। यहा उन्होंने बताया कि वे दोनों बालिग है और अपनी मर्जी से गए थे। इसके बाद पुलिस ने उन्हें कोर्ट में पेश गया। कोर्ट ने दोनों के बयान दर्ज कर लिए। इसके बाद पुलिस ने उन्हे छोड़ दिया। उन्हे एसडीएम बलजीत सिंह के समक्ष पेश किया गया था। एसडीएम ने कहा कि विवाहिता का मेडिकल कराया जाना चाहिए। इसके बाद पुलिस महिला को लेकर अस्पताल पहुची। यहा महिला ने चिकित्सा अधिकारी डॉ. हनुमान के समक्ष कहा कि वह अपनी मर्जी से गई थी। इसलिए किसी तरह का कोई मेडिकल नहीं कराना चाहती। उसका किसी पर कोई आरोप भी नहीं है। इसके बाद उन्हे दोबारा अदालत में पेश किया। पुलिस के मुताबिक महिला की करीब चार माह पहले शादी हुई थी। शादी के बाद से वह अपने पति के साथ ही रह रही थी। चार दिन पहले वह मायके आई थी। यहीं से वह दीपक नामक युवक के साथ घर से गायब हो गई। पीछे से उसकी मा ने थाने में शिकायत दर्ज करा दी। पुलिस उनकी तलाश कर रही थी कि सोमवार को दोनों खुद ही थाने पहुंच गए। महिला ने बताया कि वह दीपक के साथ ही रहना चाहती थी। लेकिन मा ने जबरन शादी कर दी। पिता का काफी समय पहले देहात हो चुका है। जाच अधिकारी सब इस्पेक्टर सीता राम ने बताया कि महिला का किसी पर कोई आरोप नहीं है। उसने अपनी मर्जी से जाने की बात स्वीकारी है। इसलिए उसके बयान दर्ज कर छोड़ दिया गया है। फिलहाल दोनों को उनके परिजनों के सुपुर्द किया गया है।

गोरखपुर के पास युवक संग नहर में कूदने वाली मीरपुर निवासी विवाहिता मंजू का शव बरामद हो गया है। बुधवार को उसका शव काजलहैड के पास मिला। पुलिस ने पोस्टमार्टम के बाद शव परिजनों को सौंप दिया। इस मामले में फिलहाल अग्रोहा थाना पुलिस कार्रवाई कर रही है।
मंजू का कथित प्रेमी गांव ढाणी माजरा निवासी संदीप अभी तक लापता है।
मृतका मंजू गाव नाढ़ोड़ी निवासी पृथ्वी सिंह नामक व्यक्ति से ब्याही हुई थी। मंजू काफी दिनों से अपने मायके मीरपुर गई हुई थी। बताते है रविवार 16 जून को गाव ढाणी माजरा निवासी संदीप ने मोबाईल कर मंजू को गाव गोरखपुर के पास बुला लिया। यहां दोनों एक साथ सिद्धमुख भाखड़ा नहर में कूद गए। जिस स्थान पर संदीप व मंजू नहर में कूदे थे उसके पास ही कुछ लोग भेड़ें चरा रहे थे व कुछ किसान भी वहा खड़े थे। इन लोगों ने देखा कि एक युवक-युवती प्लसर बाईक पर नहर के पुल के पास आए। उस वक्त दोनों उल्टिया कर रहे थे। देखते ही देखते युवती ने अपनी चुन्नी व चप्पल उतारकर नहर के किनारे रख दी व उसके बाद युवक-युवती ने नहर में छलाग लगा दी। नहर में कूदा संदीप तैरना जानता था, वह तैरकर बाहर आ गया और बाईक पर सवार होकर मौके से भाग निकला। इस मामले में मृतका के पति ने पुलिस को शिकायत देकर संदीप पर हत्या का आरोप भी लगाया था। अब मामले की जांच अग्रोहा पुलिस कर रही है।

भिवंडी।। आगरा रोड स्थित यूनुस नगर में रहने वाली एक महिला ने प्रेमी के साथ मिलकर पति की हत्या का प्रयास किया। भिवंडी शहर पुलिस ने महिला और उसके प्रेमी को गिरफ्तार कर लिया है। पुलिस के अनुसार, रुआब अली खान (33) पत्नी नसीम बानो (30) के साथ रहता था। रुआब अली बीमार रहता था। उधर, नसीम का पिछले डेढ़ साल से मोहम्मद रफीक सैय्यद (27) से प्रेम संबंध चल रहा था। पर, दोनों के प्रेम के बीच रुआब आड़े आ रहा था। उसे रास्ते से हटाने के लिए दोनों ने उसकी हत्या की योजना बनाई।

नसीम और रफीक ने रुआब के गले में रस्सी डालकर गला दबाने की कोशिश की। रुआब बेहोश हो गया, पर आरोपियों ने उसे मरा हुआ समझकर छोड़ दिया। जब उसे होश आया, तो उसने पुलिस में शिकायत दर्ज कराई।

DAVANAGERE: Bangalore is slowly becoming the suicide capital in the country, said Karnataka high court judge N Kumar.
Addressing the gathering after inaugurating a one-day programme on 'district-level mental health awareness workshop', organized by DHO, Karnataka state mental health authority, district administration, district advocates association, here on Sunday, Kumar said that over 80% of the population is increasingly falling into the suicide trap.

"Those in the IT and BT sector, too, think that suicide is an easy option. Happiness, tolerance and contentment quotient among the youths is declining," he rued.
Over 10% of the world population is suffering from mental illnesses, and over 30% of Americans alone suffer from mental illness, he noted.
Increasing work pressure, break-up of the joint family system, socio-economic crisis are leading to mental illnesses.
However, most of them are treatable, including schizophrenia.
Earlier, epilepsy was a ground for divorce, but not any more as it is curable, said Judge Kumar.
He called on practicing advocates not to encourage divorce among couples who cite schizophrenia as a ground for separation.
Encourage them to seek help and get back together, was his advice to lawyers.
Dr B N Gangadhar, vice-president of Indian Psychiatrist Association and professor at Nimhans, Bangalore, delivered a talk on suicidal tendencies, causes and remedies.

लालगंज, अप्र :गुरुवार को दो बच्चों की मां अपने प्रेमी संग फरार हो गयी। वहीं दो अन्य महिलाओं के गायब होने की शिकायत कोतवाली में की गयी है।
विवेक उर्फ रिंकू सिंह निवासी कुम्हड़ौरा ने कोतवाली में रिपोर्ट दर्ज करायी है कि उसकी पत्‍‌नी मोनी उर्फ अमृता सिंह बीती 22 जून को लालगंज बाजार गयी थी। वहा से वह अपने कथित प्रेमी पुष्पराज सिंह निवासी धन्नीपुर के साथ रफूचक्कर हो गई। पति ने बताया कि मोनी अपने साथ 50 हजार रुपए नगद ले गई है। वह अपने दो बच्चों वैभव(6) तथा वैशाली(3) को घर पर छोड़ कर गयी है।
क्षेत्र की ददरी मजरे दतौली निवासी मनोज कुमारी का विवाह एक माह पूर्व में हुआ था। बीती दो जुलाई से वह गायब है। मां विमलेश ने कोतवाली में तहरीर देकर न्याय की गुहार लगाई है। विमलेश कुमारी ने पुत्री के पास 50 हजार नगदी व 12 थान जेवर लेकर भागने की बात भी तहरीर में दर्शायी है।
दूसरी घटना में पूरे गुलाब मजरे सेमरपहा निवासी ओमप्रकाश ने लालू पुत्र गंगाराम निवासी रसूलपुर थाना सरेनी के खिलाफ उसकी पत्नी मंजू को भगा ले जाने का आरोप लगाते हुए कोतवाली में तहरीर दी है। ओमप्रकाश का विवाह पिछले 18 जून को हुआ था। पहले मामले में पुलिस द्वारा गुमशुदगी दर्ज कर ली गयी है जबकि दूसरे मामले की जाच की जा रही है।

COIMBATORE: Judicial magistrate S Thangaraj, who was arrested on Saturday on charges of raping a female sub-inspector, got bail from the Tirupur district and principal sessions judge's court on Monday. The bail order was served to the Coimbatore Central Prison and the magistrate was released on Monday evening. "He will take charge on Tuesday at the fast track court in Coonoor," his lawyer, Bhavani B Mohan said.

Thangaraj was arrested from ThattanKuttai near Kumarapalayam in Namakkal district on Saturday and sent to judicial custody after a female sub-inspector lodged a complaint with the Palladam all women police station, alleging that he had a physical relationship with her for more than a year after promising to marry her. The Palladam all women police station registered a case against the magistrate under Sections 376 (rape), 417 (cheating) and 506 (i) (criminal intimidation) of the IPC.

Thangaraj filed a bail petition before the Tirupur district and principal sessions judge's court, which came up for hearing on Monday before judge K Ganeshan. Public prosecutor KN Subramaniam argued that police had followed the rules and regulations of the Supreme Court and Madras high court in registering the case and, hence, the accused should not be allowed to enter the Nilgiris and Tirupur districts till the police investigation was completed.

Senior advocate Bhavani B Mohan, appearing on behalf of Thangaraj, argued that the woman SI had lodged a complaint with the Palladam all women police station on June 21 and that the case was registered on June 29. Police arrested the magistrate on Saturday and slapped rape charges on him. The charge does not apply in this case as they were in a relationship with mutual consent. The magistrate was not even told about the grounds of arrest. Mohan termed the incident as an assault on the judiciary and pleaded to the court to release Thangaraj.

Judge Ganeshan granted bail after the arguments concluded. Thangaraj, 31, of Oonjapalayam in Erode district is judicial magistrate at the fast track court at Coonoor in the Nilgiris district.
